National Electricity Policy

The Government of India notified National Electricity Policy on 12 February, 2005. Standing Committee on Energy in its 35th report had recommended that the Central Government may bring out a new National Electricity Policy (NEP).

Accordingly an Expert Committee under the chairmanship of Shri Gireesh B. Pradhan, ex-Chairperson, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission was constituted by the Ministry of Power to prepare draft NEP. Based on the recommendation of the Expert Committee, new draft National Electricity Policy, 2023 has been formulated, which is under finalisation.

The vision of new Electricity Policy is a financially viable and environmentally sustainable power sector furthering energy security and providing reliable 24x7 quality power at a reasonable price.

The objectives of NEP are:

  1. Ensuring investments in Generation to meet the increasing Power demand as our country develops
  2. Decarbonization
  3. Resilient and flexible Grid
  4. Financial viability of power sector
  5. Consumer centric approach

The Expert Committee constituted to prepare draft NEP had done extensive consultation with all stakeholders. Further the draft NEP, 2023 was circulated for consultation with States and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in pursuance of Section 3 of the Electricity Act, 2003. The suggestions received from CEA & States have been considered suitably in the draft NEP, 2023.
