The National Policy on Biofuels 2018 notified on 8 June, 2018 inter-alia allows production of ethanol from damaged food grains like wheat, broken rice, etc. which are unfit for human consumption. The policy also allows conversion of surplus quantities of food grains to ethanol, based on the approval of National Biofuel Coordination Committee.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing the New National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme (NNBOMP), a Central Sector Scheme, for setting up small Biogas plants (in the size range of 1 to 25 cubic metre) based on cattle dung and other mixed biodegradable wastes in remote, rural and semi-urban areas of the country.
The Union Cabinet has approved for signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of India and the Federative Republic of Brazil on Bioenergy Cooperation.
Under Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), Gail (India) Limited (GAIL) and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) have issued 443 numbers Letters of Intent (LoIs) as on 29.11.2019 for setting up Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants in the country.
